Cape Town’s Big 7 tourist attractions honour Mandela Day

To honour and celebrate Mandela Day, the Cape Town Big 7 tourist attractions recently hosted 28 children from Groot Constantia in what was a whirlwind tour of the top Cape Town destinations.

The children, ranging in age from 6 to 20, were given the opportunity to experience some of the Big 7 – starting with a trip up Table Mountain on Tuesday 14 July; followed by a visit to Cape Point on Wednesday 15 July; then to the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, with its exciting “Boomslang” canopy walkway and Dinosaur Exhibition, on Thursday 16 July; and finally culminating with a day out at the V&A Watefront on Friday 17 July where the kids not only got to experience the many fascinating and wonderful exhibits at the Two Oceans Aquarium, but also got to explore the V&A Waterfront with its many attractions, such as the Robben Island Museum, the Clock Tower and more.  As a bonus they got to see the city from a completely different angle on a double-decker City Sightseeing bus.

An exciting trip in the cable car, the vast vistas over the city of Cape Town offered from the top of Table Mountain, the beauty of the botanical gardens and of Cape Point, and a glimpse into the underwater world and all its creatures were all new experiences for these children – all of whom had an amazing few days as tourists in their own city.

Grant Newton, managing member of the Big 7 and the sales and marketing manager of Groot Constantia, explains that every year the Big 6, now the Big 7, have engaged in a similar community initiative as part of their commitment to the Responsible Tourism Charter.

“So few of our own youth ever get to experience the tourist attractions that are in their own back yard.  These children are the future ambassadors for Cape Town and cannot be expected to hold a sense of pride and place in their City if they do not know what it has to offer.”

“In the spirit and ethos of Sustainability and Responsibility as held in the Responsible Tourism charter we made the decision to look after our own – we believe that experiences such as these children have had over the last few days can change their perceptions forever and open up a host of new horizons – therefore potentially changing their lives,” says Newton.

Cape Town’s Big 7 is a joint marketing initiative between Cape Point, the City Walk, Groot Constantia, Kirstenbosch, Robben Island, Table Mountain Cableway and the V&A Waterfront – all must-see attractions form the core of the true Cape Town experience.
