It’s an ice cold winter’s day in Cape Town and I have a date with food and wine and history at Groot Constantia. A weak sun is shining on the vineyards and the old buildings have a classic beauty that is beautiful in every season.
I recently discovered that sometimes it takes science to make magic when I chatted to Groot Constantia’s winemaker, Boela Gerber. A lot of analysis and research was undertaken to faithfully recreate ‘Constantia Wyn’ as it was enjoyed by Napoleon Bonaparte, Frederick the Great of Prussia and King Louis Phillipe of France. How do we know Napoleon…
I arrived at Simon’s Restaurant after a rather delicious wine tasting at the Groot Constantia wine estate and couldn’t wait to tuck into a tasty meal. It was a cold, rainy Spring day and thankfully my table was right next to the fireplace.
The South African Post Office has paid tribute to the South African wine industry through a set of five small international letter rate stamps and a commemorative envelope issued on 6 October 2017.
In Sometimes it takes science to make magic I shared the story of how Groot Constantia’s winemaker, Boela Gerber, settled on the formula for making the Grand Constance wine of today.
To honour the ‘Constantia Wyn’ legacy, the Grand Constance would be presented in a bottle that was as historically accurate as possible. “Jean [Naudé, CEO of the Groot Constantia] and I were both curious and hands on,” explained Boela. “It took us quite a few years… at least five years.” As he related their journey to find the right size and shape, I realised that this chapter of the Grand Constance story was a puzzle with pieces scattered all over the world.
The Cape Town Big 7 and the Cape Camino will be hosting Jean-Pierre de Villiers, an international extreme sports athlete and life coach / international speaker. He will be running the Cape Camino on the 30 and 31 August and will start and finish his run at the V&A Waterfront. Jean-Pierre is a South African, currently living in the UK.
Signs of spring can be seen everywhere on our estate: from the first green leaves on our ancient oaks to the blooming colourful flowers. Just take a walk around the estate when you next visit and enjoy this beautiful season.
Simon’s Restaurant at Groot Constantia is excited to once again present the Hop and Vine festival. With the list of enthusiastic participants and great products there will be a range of quality wines and craft beers being poured as well as limited ciders and craft spirits.

Groot Constantia VSOP Cape Brandy and Grand Constance tasting at Groot Constantia.
It was a cold and wet winter’s day when we headed out to Groot Constantia for a visit with winemaker, Boela Gerber and marketing manager, Grant Newton. We sat sheltered in the newly refurbished Cloete Cellar, and as I looked out at the much needed rain, I decided it wasn’t a bad way to hide out from the weather. Although, rain or shine, any conditions would be fine for a tasting at Groot Constantia.
I have toured Groot Constantia’s production cellar a number of times over the years, but on this particular day I found myself making my way into a part of the cellar that is not in the usual tour. I was there to chat to wine maker, Boela Gerber, about the award-winning Grand Constance.
From our cellars Frederick the Great of Prussia, King Louis Philippe of France and Napoleon Bonaparte were supplied...
